The uniqueness of wetlands lies in their particular hydrological conditions and the role they play as transition systems or ecotones, as well as in the great richness and diversity of their biotic and abiotic components, which make them among the most valuable, complex and dynamic yet most fragile ecosystems of the planet.
On many of the world's islands the introduction of invasive species has caused the disappearance of many animals and significant changes to the landscape. In other cases, there are economic impacts (affecting crops, forests, livestock or fishing), or even impacts on public health (spreading germs, allergic processes).
Therefore, the aim of the project is to protect and recover the natural environment by reducing the number of invasive species and, when feasible, eradicating them from the most important wetlands of the Balearic Islands, in order to conserve and provide a valuable ecosystem and a quality natural landscape.
The project is also of public interest because of the need to maintain the specific composition of the biological communities of the wetlands and especially because of the protected character of these areas. It can also be upheld as an example of how the public and tourists should use these spaces.
In addition, public notifications will be made related to the following aspects: the harmful effects of invasive species on the environment and on native species; the results of this project; and the value and fragility of the wetlands.
