Recovery and renovation of the city walls (Bastió des Governador i Reial Alcàsser)

The project

The City Council of Ciutadella aims to safeguard and recover its historical heritage and improve the image of Ciutadella de Menorca that transports us through practically the entire history of Menorca to a vision of the monumental profiles of its most emblematic buildings embraced by canvas paintings and the bastions of its walls.

This project includes the renovation of an emblematic space of high historical and cultural heritage value that will involve renovating the following elements: the Bastion of the Governor and the Real Alcázar (Town Hall), the Muradeta, the Bastion of Sa Font, and other complementary actions (port layout, lighting, renovation of miscellaneous elements, etc.).

Each of these actions aims to fully include historical, archaeological, architectural and functional studies necessary for a careful renovation and in line with the strictest requirements for the correct management of historical heritage, its value and its social, cultural and tourist usage.

Historical heritage makes a city highly attractive to tourists and historical buildings are the resource par excellence. This heritage and its history attract both foreigners and tourists of middle and old age, who are trying to learn about the authenticity of the destination. The renovation of the walls, the bastions and the Real Alcázar of Ciutadella de Menorca will lead to a cultural and heritage tourist offer throughout the year, promoting off-season tourism, the activation of the tourist product and the promotion of sustainable tourism in low season.
