Creation of the Museum of the Archaeological Park of Puig de Sa Morisca

The project

The Archaeological Park of Puig de Sa Morisca is a project that has been carried out by the City Council of Calvià in collaboration with the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), since 1997. It is an area of more than 45 hectares that includes one of the most important archaeological sites in Mallorca, many of which are under public ownership.

In addition to its exceptional archaeological wealth, the park also has a significant natural, ethnographic and landscape heritage that can be seen from walking the more than six kilometres of paths that run through it and receive, at present, over 25,000 people year. However, the park has certain shortcomings due to the lack of an adequate museum to exhibit and present to the public all the archaeological material that has been recovered over decades of excavation work.

The park also has certain limitations for holding complementary activities related to education and tourism, and specific workshops, which is the reason behind this project to create the museum of the Archaeological Park of Puig de Sa Morisca.

The proposed museum involves the creation of resources that will meet the following requirements:

1. Creating a museum that complies with the regulations and can accommodate the archaeological collections of the park and adjacent areas.

2. Creating a museum that will provide the municipality and the southeast of Mallorca with a touristic-cultural product that it doesn't currently have.

3. Creating a museum that completes the offer of the Archaeological Park of Puig de Sa Morisca and that becomes a reference point for public awareness and the management of archaeological heritage in the Balearic Islands.
