The project
The Cabrera Archipelago Maritime-Terrestrial National Park (abbreviated PNMTAC in Catalan) is a unique ecosystem due to its physical, geographic, biological and ecological features. It is widely considered the most important protected natural space on the Balearic Islands.
By launching this proposal, and in order to contribute to turning Cabrera into a laboratory of sustainability in all spheres of management, including water resources, energy, waste, etc., and to make it an ideal place where adaptive solutions to global change are generated and applied using the best technology available, the goals are:
- To avoid and prevent water, soil and air pollution
- To properly manage a scarce resource: water
- To minimise the use of fossil fuels
- To optimise the use of photovoltaic energy
There are 6 planned actions in this project, and they are all grounded upon a series of regulations and provisions which give meaning to the nature in a National Park, as the utmost mechanism for protecting a natural space in Spain which is also internationally recognised.
Therefore, first a water purifying station will be installed in the Port de Cabrera area in order to ensure optimal conditions of the effluents pouring into the sea; likewise, the water pipes for human consumption will be replaced and buried underground in order to minimise water losses and guarantee optimal sanitary conditions for human consumption.
Moreover, the capacity to accumulate photovoltaic energy will be increased through the installation of a battery bank, and the photovoltaic panels will be replaced in order to increase the production of photovoltaic energy and decrease the amount of fossil fuel burnt.
Furthermore, a mobile electric fleet will be implemented with the purchase of electric vehicles, and efforts will be made to ensure that the batteries of these vehicles can be charged at all times. With regard to the technical direction and coordination of the actions, there are plans to hire a technician who can carry out these tasks during the three days on which the project will be implemented.
