The project consists in the improvement of the hydraulic infrastructures and of the water cycle of the Balearic Islands, with the aim of supplying the population of Ibiza and Sant Antoni with the water desalination through existing distribution networks.

At present, the Santa Eulària des Riu supply system works through a set of boreholes/wells that send water directly into the distribution system. When consumption is low, the excess volume of water accumulates in the Can Vicent des Puig Reservoir, which has a capacity of 300 m3 and acts as an "off-stream reservoir".
Therefore, there is a pressure system that starts up or stops subterranean pumps located in the wells, depending on the demand. This causes high pressure fluctuations with the consequent wear on materials, which leads to an increase in the failure rate and, as a consequence, a reduction in the quality of the service.
Within the framework of improvements in mineral quality, it is necessary and advisable to interconnect and group the arrival of subterranean reservoirs of water and desalinated water in a single reservoir in order to homogenise the quality of the water supplied to the network and have emergency supply systems that can be used in the case of possible contingencies in the desalination facilities.
This project proposes the construction of a regulating reservoir to solve the mentioned supply problems, avoid pressure fluctuations and comply with sanitary regulations by improving the quality of the water supplied.
The construction of the regulating reservoir and its pipelines will enable desalinated water to reach one of the connection points and the possibility of supplying higher quality water to consumers in the municipality of Santa Eulària des Riu (Puig d'en Valls and Nostra Senyora de Jesús), Ibiza and Sant Antoni de Portmany which are currently served by private water supply companies (in the process of municipalisation) through the existing distribution networks in Nostra Senyora de Jesús and Puig d'en Valls.
