The project

The Department of Work, Trade and Industry proposes the creation of a Professional Training Centre for Employment in the area of recovery and maintenance of marine crafts in Palma to enable all professional training provision in this area to be covered, as well as other related purposes.

Having a training infrastructure of this kind will provide cover for what is one of the most important and dynamic areas of the Balearic economy – the nautical sector. There are currently almost no facilities at all, despite how important this sector has become. The centre plans to provide training in the area of repairs and maintenance on leisure and similar crafts, and expects to undertake more than 40 training actions each calendar year, aimed at a minimum of 400 students.

The aim of the project is to provide and create suitable facilities to deliver professional training for employment in the area of marine craft maintenance and repair, under the umbrella grouping of Vehicle Transport and Maintenance. The overlap with certain areas such as engines, welding, electricity and electronics opens up the possibility of the training being extended to other similar sectors.

The project is divided into two parts. The first is to physically fit out the infrastructures to be able to provide professional training for employment in the area of marine craft maintenance and repair, and the second is to acquire the equipment and furniture to be able to deliver the training actions. The various official qualifications that exist are divided into four main areas: treating structures (fibreglass, hulls, paintwork, etc.); engines; electricity, electronics and rigging; and merchant marine courses.
