Rehabilitation of the Rambla defence tower in Mahon

What does it consist of?

This project focusses on restoring the defensive tower of Maó’s promenade. Its main objective is to stop the process of deterioration by consolidating the structural elements to ensure the tower is sufficiently safe and stable for use as an outdoor museum exhibit and as part of the scenery.

The project

Torre de Rambla is a defence tower built by the British at the end of the 18th century and was declared as a BIC site of cultural interest a few years ago. It is located within the public domain and does not currently have any use. Despite its current state of degradation, it is the tower which best preserves all the original elements, so it is essential to conserve this semi-ruin so that visitors can enjoy it.

The main objective of the project is to halt the degradation of the Mahon defence tower, consolidating its structural elements to show its current status while respecting history and the original construction process.

The consolidation actions are those that will halt or minimise the process of degradation of the general structure of the tower as well as avoiding the irreparable loss of the constructive elements that it is made of.

Given the importance of the history, heritage and landscape of Torre de Rambla, which is the only tower located in the Natural Park of s'Albufera d'Es Grau, the work must be meticulously carried out and be constantly supervised by an archaeologist, who will be fundamental to complement the information provided to the project.

In order to achieve these objectives, the plan is to carry out consolidation work so that the final appearance of the tower looks exactly the same as it does today, guaranteeing the safety and stability necessary for exterior museum usage and landscape value.

Since it is almost impossible to obtain stones with the same tonal characteristics as those used during the original construction, as many of the stones as possible will be recovered for their relocation on the tower. The remaining spaces between the stones must be filled in with a structural mortar that guarantees that the degradation process will be halted and the strength of the "skin" of the tower will be improved.
